One question that has come up often since I started offering videos is about the difference between our family films and the videos I capture on photo sessions. Let’s break it down with examples.

Family Film

A family film session has a greater emphasis on telling a story through video. We may or may not plan to take photos during a family film session, but even with photos, the focus remains on video storytelling. 

A film session is planned in terms of what story we might want to tell (the example below is a story of everyday playful family life) and is also left to spontaneity at the time — as in, I am not necessarily directing or talking much.

Photo Session Video

A photo session video is simply video taken during a photo session that just shows some live action from the session and is often interspersed with still images. The video really just tells the story of the photo session — not that it isn’t also telling a story, but the session’s emphasis was on photography storytelling, not film storytelling. 

As with all sessions (except documentary), I am directing and posing and giving you ideas.

Regardless of the type, we will work together to plan it all out and have fun when it’s time for you to be in front of my camera!

Can a messy picture be saved? Yes it can!

When working with babies and toddlers, sometimes a super cute moment happens but the little one is messy or the background isn’t just right. Technology and a photographer’s know-how for using it can turn a so-so outtake into a treasured image. I wanted to show you the before and after of a shot I took of my grandson yesterday when I was waiting on his baby brother to finish nursing. 

I actually decided I wanted to practice on and save this image of him because he really looks like his dad – my son – here, and I wanted to get this look printed. 

With the mood he was in, if I had stopped to try to clean the paint, etc. off his face, I have no doubt he would have gotten angrier and I wouldn’t have captured this look at all. I will sometimes tell parents to leave something be if their little one is also having a rough time. Something about face-washing really amps things up with kiddos sometimes. So, if we have images that we want to save, I’ll just clean them up in post-production. I’d rather clean up some images than not have any at all!

Overall, our session with the baby was a bust, but I am happy to have this final image of our bigger boy — even if he wasn’t necessarily happy to have the picture taken.

We met up in the summer of 2023 for a quick mini-session and ended up with soooooo many favorites. How could I not keep capturing all the moments?!

When I say kiddos are so often right outside of the frame for mom and dad pictures, this is what I mean!

The boys are the cutest!

When they reach an age where one of them can lead the other through direction, it’s fun to see what happens next. Love that big brother decided to whisper to little brother. Probably something like, “Let’s just do the walking she asked for and then we can play!”

Our initial maternity session was with my daughter alone, as her husband was still overseas, but then we got to sneak in a quick session of the two of them celebrating that beautiful baby bump, and it was perfection! This girl is MY girl..as in my own daughter. She has been in front of my camera her whole life. But never before like this, expecting her first child. There were many moments during the session where the emotions bubbled up, and then more as I processed the images, and now the tears of joy come again this many months later now that I have witnessed her become a mama and meet that baby bump, her son.

Life is so beautiful! Thank you to my girl for pushing yourself that day to allow me to take a trillion photos of you.
